A Thunderbolt 3 dock is an extension to your laptop through a single cable, and can support multiple peripherals all at the same time, to deliver high-speed data transfers for video, audio, and storage devices.

A Thunderbolt dock can be an important accessory as Thunderbolt ports become more common in laptops. Consider the Thunderbolt dock to be a more powerful, high-speed alternative to a USB-C hub, providing additional ports for mice, keyboards, external drives, SD cards, and, most importantly, displays to your laptop. It can also be used to charge your laptop and other electronic devices.

Indeed, one significant difference between a Thunderbolt dock and its USB-C counterpart is bandwidth. A single 4K display can be supported by a USB-C hub, but at an eye-straining 30Hz refresh rate.

Thunderbolt hubs can support up to two 4K displays at a smooth 60Hz refresh rate. If your laptop has a Thunderbolt port, it’s likely that it supports the Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 standards, which both offer 40 Gbps.

The Thunderbolt 4 specification was introduced in July 2020 as part of Intel’s 11th-generation “Tiger Lake” Core laptops, and it has since become popular on gaming laptops.

Thunderbolt Docks Black Friday Deals 2024

CalDigit TS3 Plus Black Friday

CalDigit Thunderbolt Station 3 Plus (CalDigit TS3 Plus) – CalDigit’s Thunderbolt Station 3 Plus is one of the most popular Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market, and it’s easy to see why: a vertical orientation that saves space, 87W charging, a plethora of ports, and even niceties like a S/PDIF optical connection and an external Thunderbolt jack for daisy-chaining devices.

The TS3 Plus weighs 1.04 pounds and measures 5.15 x 3.87 x 1.57 inches. It rested comfortably in a vertical position despite the lack of a supporting stand. CalDigit includes small rubber feet to help you position the aluminium dock horizontally.

Two Thunderbolt 3 ports (one from the laptop, one for an external connection) and a single DisplayPort 1.2 port are available. For a single 4K display, this is ideal, but for two, it’s awkward.

The TS3 Plus comes with a full-size SD (SD 4.0 UHS-II) card reader, a S/PDIF port, gigabit ethernet, and two 3.5mm audio jacks—one in and one out. There are also five USB Type A ports (all of which are 5Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 1) and two USB-C ports (one 5Gbps port, and one 10Gbps port).

A second USB-C dongle powered by either the Thunderbolt or USB-C dock—or a forward-facing display with a built-in Thunderbolt/USB-C connector—is required to enable two 4K/60 displays.

OWC Thunderbolt Dock Black Friday

OWC Thunderbolt Dock (OWCTB4DOCK) – The OWC Thunderbolt Dock is the big brother to OWC’s Thunderbolt Hub, with three Thunderbolt 3 ports, three USB-A 10Gbps ports, one USB-A 2.0 charging port, an SD (UHS-II) card slot, gigabit Ethernet, and an audio jack.

This is a specialty dock, like its smaller sibling, for those who have invested in Thunderbolt displays and other Thunderbolt devices. Aside from the Thunderbolt interface, there are no external display connections. The Dock is 7.8″ x 2.9″ x 1.0″ and weighs 14.1 oz. The Thunderbolt 4 cable that comes with the device is about 2.5 feet long.

The Dock, like the OWC Thunderbolt Hub, allows you to connect directly to Thunderbolt displays and devices, including two 4K/60 displays. (DisplayPort 1.4 is supported by the Dock.) Only one 4K/60 display will be enabled if you connect another Thunderbolt dock to one of the Thunderbolt 3 outputs.

A Thunderbolt 4 drive connected directly wrote data at 1,221 MB/s and read data at 2,292 MB/s. It wrote at 1027 MB/s and 2210 MB/s when connected to the Dock.

An SD card inserted into the Dock reads and writes data at speeds comparable to those of Microsoft’s Surface Book 4 laptop’s SD card slot.

TB3-MiniDock-HM Black Friday

Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock (Dual HDMI 2.0) (TB3-MiniDock-HM) – The CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock (Dual HDMI 2.) appears to be an excellent choice for a purpose-built, bus-powered Thunderbolt dock right out of the box: it’s cheap, has all the ports you’ll need, and not much else.

Gigabit ethernet, two USB Type-A ports (USB 3 and USB 2), and two HDMI 2.0 ports are included in the version we tested. The bus-powered TB3-MiniDock-HM is connected to your laptop via a short 5.3-inch Thunderbolt 3 cable. Remember that “bus-powered” means you won’t need a charging brick, which means you’ll save space.

IOgear Thunderbolt Black Friday

IOgear Thunderbolt 3 Travel Dock (GTD300) – Despite its designation as a travel dock, the IOgear GTD300 is an excellent regular work companion. The Thunderbolt 3 dock, on the other hand, is bus-powered, so you’ll need to plug in your laptop for best results, even though the hub doesn’t require its own charger.

The IOgear plastic dock is one of the smallest we’ve tested, measuring just 2.2 x 0.91 x 4.06 inches and fitting neatly into a backpack for travel. A green plastic shell on the dock’s underside hides a nook where the dock’s short, 5-inch cord can be stored when not in use.

One HDMI 2.0 port, one DisplayPort 1.2 port, one 5Gbps USB-A port, and a gigabit ethernet port are the only ports available. The GTD300 will suffice if you’re content to use the USB port for a mouse or keyboard rather than high-speed external storage. (Of course, a 10Gbps port would have been preferable.)

Some customer reviews on Amazon are a little perplexing: The ethernet port, as well as the USB-A port, worked as expected in our tests. The GTD300 gets noticeably hot, but not uncomfortably so, in our opinion, due to its small form factor.

Plugable TBT3-UDZ Black Friday

Plugable 14-in-1 USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 Dock – Compatible with Mac and Windows, 96W Laptop Charging, 2x HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort, 7x USB ports, Ethernet, Audio, SD/MicroSD | The TBT3-UDZ from Plugable is one of the best Thunderbolt 3 docks we’ve seen, but it’s also one of the priciest. With a slew of ports, including the ability to use DisplayPort or HDMI for both displays, the TBT3-UDZ provides plenty of options. There’s even a sturdy stand for vertically mounting it on your desk.

The TBT3-UDZ has a 10Gbps USB-C and 10Gbps USB-A (USB 3.1) port on the front, as well as microSD and SD card slots and a headphone jack. A pair of DisplayPort 1.4 ports and HDMI 2.0 ports are complemented by five USB-A (USB 3.0 ports) and gigabit ethernet ports on the back.

OWC Thunderbolt Hub Black Friday

OWC Thunderbolt Hub (OWCTB4HUB5P) – Other World Computing (OWC) focuses on Mac products, as Thunderbolt-powered displays are more common in the Mac world than in the Windows world. Because the OWCTB4HUB5P is so small, it only has a 10Gbps USB 3.2 Type A port, a Kensington lock, and three Thunderbolt 3 ports.

If you’re directly connecting a Thunderbolt display (which we don’t recommend doing in 2021) or a direct-attached Thunderbolt device, designing a Thunderbolt 4 dock with three Thunderbolt 3 ports makes sense. Up to five devices can be daisy-chained. However, if you’re thinking about getting the OWC Hub to connect to another Thunderbolt dock to expand your I/O options even more, think twice.

Belkin Thunderbolt Black Friday

Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core – Belkin’s Thunderbolt 3 Dock Core came in plain packaging, and the product is unadorned as well: it’s a well-designed “powered” Thunderbolt 3 travel dock.

The Thunderbolt Dock Core black is nearly square, measuring 5.2 x 6.5 x 1.5 inches, and the included 8-inch Thunderbolt 3 cord provides plenty of flexibility. The HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 ports provide a stable 4K/60Hz experience to both of my 4K displays, and the ports are evenly spaced around the flat, black plastic cube. There’s gigabit ethernet and a 3.5mm audio jack, but the USB 3.1 and USB 2.0 Type A ports aren’t labelled, so it’ll be difficult to tell them apart.

Our Pick – Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 USB Docking Station Includes 135w Slim Tip Ac Adapter With 2 Pin Power Cord.
