Google’s new Pixel Buds are true and comfortable wireless headphones created with the company’s voice assistant in mind. They feature one-touch access to Google Assistant and live translation capabilities, as well as long Bluetooth range and decent battery life.
But they fall short of audio performance, especially at $ 179, with wobbly, slightly wheezing sound lagging behind similarly priced competitors like the Jabra Elite Active 75t.
It has taken Google a surprisingly long time to make good headphones. The original 2018 Pixel Buds were a bulky mushroom-shaped mess that made you look like Frankenstein’s monster. The charging case was huge, the sound was mediocre, and when you finally mustered the courage to go out with them, you felt like everyone who used AirPods was laughing at you.
My expectations were muted last fall when Google announced a revamped pair with the same name, this time with no wires connecting the buds, just like the deals from Apple, Samsung, and Amazon. Just in specs, they’re not remarkable.
They have five hours of battery life, which is short, especially compared to the 11 hours you have with Samsung outbreaks. They also cost $ 179, making them $ 20 more than Apple’s AirPods.
And yet, somehow, I have fallen in love with Google’s small, rounded headphones. Especially as someone with an Android phone, I would take care of these almost all wireless headphones.
The new Pixel Buds come with a case that is similar in size and design to the AirPods case, similar to silk, although Google is a bit more rounded with a nice matte finish instead of Apple’s glossy plastic. I think it looks like a cute little egg.
The shoots no longer have a wire between them, and they are small. How do they stay safe in your ears? Each button has a long, elephant-like trunk, culminating in a cozy silicone tip, with cute ear flaps protruding from the top for added stability. That means when you use them during the full five-hour charge time, you won’t have the same annoying pain that you might have after five hours of listening to hard-tip AirPods.

Google Pixel Buds Comfort
Turn, go, and enjoy. It’s that simple to use the new Pixel Buds. Inserting the Pixel Buds involved holding the button in my ear with the wing of the ear facing up. From there, I simply rotated the knob counterclockwise until the wing settled comfortably against my shell. And although I could feel the medium olives in my inner ear, neither of them bulged against my channel, allowing me to use the buttons for more than two hours while listening to music, I called my friends and attended a video chat.
Google Pixel Buds settings
Move over to AirPods Pro, there is a new almost instant pairing device in town. As soon as I appeared on top of the Pixel Buds charging case, Google’s Fast Pair technology was activated. A pairing notification appeared on the Pixel 4 XL. Clicking on the notification led me to a tutorial that walked me through all the relevant button features, including the built-in touch controls and digital assistant activation phrases.
After the initial tour, opening the lid of the charging case will automatically pair with the phone. And if you are not a fan of Google Pixel phones, Fast Pair will also work with any device with Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher or iOS. But with those devices, you will have to go through your normal Bluetooth menu to configure everything. From there, you’ll get all of that Fast Pair goodness. Pixel Buds can be paired up to 6 devices at once.
Placing the buttons on my ears caused a happy tone and let me know that everything was working as expected.
Google Pixel Buds controls
Google has something here. This iteration of Pixel Buds could be the best version of the wireless headphone touch controls I’ve had the pleasure to use. There is only enough surface area to slide back and forth to raise and lower the volume.
Best of all is tapping. Whether it was a single tap to answer/ignore calls or play/pause a track or double or triple tap to jump forward or backward on tracks, the physical act of playing was extremely comfortable. That meant that I wasn’t involuntarily sinking the tips of my ears into my ear canal just to change tracks.
Google Pixel Buds Features
Today, it is not enough that headphones or even headphones are simply wireless. There have to be some features to differentiate them from the package. In the case of Pixel Buds, you have some cool features that start with the Google Assistant hands-free. Similar to AirPods Pro, you can invoke the Google Assistant using only your voice. A simple “Hello Google” and the Assistant took action ready to make my offer.
Inevitably, you are going to misplace a headset no matter how careful you think you are. Fortunately, Pixel Buds has a Find My Earbuds feature that will display the location of missing buttons or you can tap the button, making it sound louder and louder. He reached me enough to find the left Bud, which, without realizing it, was found lodged between the cushions of my sofa.
Similar to the original Pixel Buds, the new model also works with Google Translate. Once the app is installed, you can use the Buds to chat in another language, more or less. Pressing one of the buttons or saying “Hello Google, help me speak Spanish” launched Google Translate on Pixel in conversation mode. And so, everything I said was instantly translated into Spanish and when I got tired of talking, he started to translate “Untold Stories from the E.R., which was playing on my TV in the background.” Changing the languages from Spanish to English and switching to Telemundo gave me a solid translation. Google Translate works with more than 40 languages, provided there is a good Wi-Fi connection.
Google Pixel Buds app
Like any truly wireless headset worthwhile, the Pixel Buds have a free companion app. This is where you will rename Buds and check the battery life. This is where you can also access the Find My Earbuds feature, enable/disable touch controls, adaptive sound, in-ear detection, and Google Assistant.
What I want Google to include is an adjustable equalizer so I can create my own custom sound.
Adaptive Google Pixel Buds Audio
Like the Samsung Galaxy Buds and Jabra Elite 75t, the Pixel Buds lack active noise cancellation. Instead, Google relies on the fairly tight seal that the earphones create to allow for a passive noise cancellation measure to shut down the outside world. And for the most part, it’s effective, until my boyfriend decides to walk into the room singing out of tune. So I need to turn the volume up a bit.
But that doesn’t mean the Buds are completely ANC-free. The headphones are equipped with Adaptive Sound, which is the auditory version of adaptive lighting on your smartphone. That means Pixel Buds automatically adjusts the volume of Pixel Buds relative to my surroundings. So when I went from my quiet room to do the dishes and prepare the preparation, the volume increased slightly to account for the noisier environment. And once the noise decreased, the volume decreased.
Adjusting the volume is quite subtle as it increases/decreases enough to smoothly turn off the noise. So don’t expect the volume to go from 40% to 60%, it’s more like a 50 to 52% situation, enough for you to notice a difference, but not noticeably. It is not pronounced almost like a real ANC you will find in AirPods Pro.
Google Pixel Buds Audio
So what do Pixel Buds sound like? Pretty good actually. In fact, I’m really impressed with Pixel Buds’ audio quality. Custom 12mm dynamic speaker drivers provide warm, relatively rich audio with crisp detail. Something I noticed across the board when comparing them to AirPods Pro is that Pixel Buds aren’t that loud. In fact, to match AirPods Pro to 50%, I had to raise Pixel Buds up to 70%.
That meant when I heard Luther Vandross’s “If If For For Night” the bass was clean. He could easily hear every part of the track, including the delicate clink of wind chimes and the triangle in the background, and Vandross’ legendary smooth, silky range was front and center, the presentation not quite as advanced on the AirPods Pro.
Pixel Buds sounded better during Santana’s “Europe” Smile from Earth’s Cry Sky. The artist’s electric guitar was full and rich. The generous soundstage also allowed the organ to breathe and I was even able to hear the applause of the live audience. However, due to the more comprehensive soundstage, the AirPods sounded better overall.
I also listened to some 8D audio tracks, including Kahlid & Normani’s “Love Lies” and was impressed by the precision of the spatial audio effect as the instruments and voices seemed to rotate seamlessly in 360 degree virtual space. The AirPods Pro performed equally well, but was stronger similarly to my other test tracks.
Google Pixel Buds and Bluetooth battery life
Google claims that Pixel Buds can last 5 hours on a charge if you’re only listening to music, 2.5 hours if you’re chatting. I made a combination of the two over the course of several days and averaged 4:27 before I had to put them back in the case for a charge. In all my tests, I noticed that the right bud tended to drain faster than the left. I’m not sure if this is because as a right-handed person the correct yolk was taking the most hits, but the difference is noticeable.
Since the charging case adds an additional 24 hours of battery life to the mix, it’s not a big problem. Ten minutes in the case gives the yolks two hours of battery life. The case also supports Qi in case you want to go the wireless charging path.
Pixel Buds use Bluetooth 5.0 to connect to all their devices, which means a fairly stable connection. Friends kept connecting with the Pixel 4 XL even though I left the phone up when I came down to exercise. I even managed to go to my backyard for some fresh air without loss of audio.
Call quality from Google Pixel Buds
I gave the Pixel Buds pair of beamforming microphones a serious workout during my tests, alternating between video and voice calls. And everyone I spoke to reported clear and loud audio with no echo. When I spoke to my mother, the sound was so clean that I heard my niece in the back looking at Arthur. And when I walked around the neighborhood, she didn’t hear any interference from the wind.
Bottom line
Google redeemed itself with the new Pixel Buds. A truly wireless pair of headphones that deliver on the promises of the original Buds and more. The Buds are immensely comfortable and offer a pinch of durability with their sweat and water resistance. And with a selection of solid colors, the $ 179 shoots are even a little on the trend. But outside of aesthetics, the headphones offer excellent audio quality with a number of interesting features, such as real-time translation.
However, I hope that the next Pixel Buds model will include ANC as there is a clear difference between passive and active noise cancellation. For now, if you want the best in ANC wireless headphones, you’ll want to check out the $ 249 AirPods Pro or the $ 229 Sony WF-1000-XM3. But if you’re looking for a pair of attractive and affordable truly wireless headphones, you can’t go wrong with the Google Pixel Buds.
