Opal is the result of crowd-sourcing through GE’s new online community, FirstBuild, and it will only be available for purchase on Indiegogo. The Opal will be produced in small batches at FirstBuild’s 33,000-square-foot microfactory in Louisville, Ky., with volume dependent on orders.
From concept to completion, it took four months. There’s no need to be concerned if it fails. Compared to a traditional product launch, which can cost tens of millions of dollars, the upfront costs were 20 times lower. “If we’re going to fail, we want to fail quickly,” said Natarajan Venkatakrishnan, also known as Venkat, director of FirstBuild and head of R&D for GE Appliances.
The Opal is FirstBuild’s eighth product. It’s a nugget ice maker, which works by packing small ice crystals together to create soft, crunchy nuggets of ice that chill beverages faster than traditional cubes and are far more chewable than your average barrel. You may have encountered them in a movie theatre beverage or a soda from a Sonic restaurant. However, they are not dealt with by any major appliance manufacturer.

Just ask a fan of nugget ice if all ice is created equal. Nugget ice, also known as compressed or pellet ice, has a devoted following and is renowned for its soft, crunchy texture and slow melt time.
Nugget ice is difficult to come by, being sold only at a few restaurant chains and gas stations, and home nugget ice makers have traditionally been expensive, costing thousands of dollars.
Addicts of chewable ice now have something to rejoice about. The $499 Firstbuild Opal Nugget Ice has arrived, bringing with it the ability to make pounds of nugget ice in just hours from your kitchen counter.
Of course, for a single-function small appliance, that’s still a lot of money. Even so, the Opal is a game changer for those who absolutely must have nugget ice in their homes. It’s the first and only accessible way for ordinary people to make this frozen novelty for themselves.
The Opal Nugget Ice is larger than your average home kitchen appliance, standing 17.25 inches tall and measuring 10.5 inches wide by 15.5 inches deep. It’s no lightweight, either, weighing in at a hefty 44 pounds.
Despite its size and weight, the Opal has a pleasingly minimalist aesthetic. You won’t notice the Opal’s massive size because of the smooth stainless steel that runs across its flat surfaces and rectangular chassis. It also has a slick-looking LED ring around a single circular button. This LED ring changes colours to indicate the status of the Opal.
The bin itself serves as a square window through which you can observe ice production in real time. The clear bin slides out to reveal a cube-shaped container when you pull on the corners. You can leave the bin hanging down at an angle for easy ice access, or remove it entirely.
The Opal’s water reservoir is located inside and directly beneath the ice bin. Because the Opal doesn’t have a dedicated water line input, you’ll have to fill it from your sink. The Opal can fill its bin to its full 3 pound capacity with one tank load of water, which takes about 3 hours.
You can even use a mobile app to control the Opal Nugget Ice by connecting it to your phone or tablet via Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the software isn’t very useful. Opal is equipped with a number of sensors that detect when the ice bin is full or when it has been removed. They also notice when the water tank is empty. I wish the app could send me notifications when the tank water needs to be refilled, the tray needs to be emptied, or the tank needs to be cleaned.
The app can only display the Opal’s current status at this time and cannot send alerts. You can tell the Opal to stop and start making ice, dim or brighten its LED ring, and set an ice creation schedule all from within the app.
The Opal Nugget Ice that I tested performed admirably. The unit produced ice at a rate of 1 pound per hour, which was met and slightly exceeded. My Opal test unit produced 1.06 pounds of cylindrical pellet ice in 1 hour in my experience. After 3 hours, the device had a total weight of 3.1 pounds in its collection tray.
The $499 Firstbuild Opal Nugget Ice ($449 on pre-order) works as advertised, despite its high price when compared to other countertop appliances. The machine produces nugget ice quickly and is simple to operate.
Given the cost of alternatives (such as this luxury unit from Scotsman), First Build has, indeed, disrupted the market with the Opal. Even though I suspect most people, including those who love nugget ice, will find it difficult to justify spending $500 on an ice maker, for the dedicated few, homemade nugget ice has just become a lot more accessible.
